Vintage Tags

Last night was guild meeting and another trade of the vintage tags with Julie.  We are the only ones doing this now.  Between the two of us, we have amassed a nice little showing of this fun form of art.  Julie is really so good at this and has gathered a lot of the vintage and thrift items that make this so much fun and has taken some online classes.  There are a lot of blogs out there dedicated to collage.  My little girl above skipping rope with her thread was a vintage advertisement I found on the web and I printed it out on the printer's fabric you can find now.  The old salesslip is a scan of an actual one from PA Berner's department store in Peoria.  It could have been filled in by my Aunt Leah who worked at the notion counter in Bergner's for many years.  I found the slip in a box of things I bought at an auction west of our town in the late 80's.  I think that trim might have come from the same box.

Trading Tags

 

My friend Julie at  http://justtickety-boo.blogspot.com/  and I have traded Artist Trading Cards along with some other quilters for quite a long time.  This fall just Julie and I are continuing with the trade and are doing tags with a vintage theme.  I have lost the one I did for September (it will show up, I am sure!) but here is the one I did for November and

Some ATC's

Here is the ATC I did for May - it was the color purple.For June, we were to depict women who influenced our lives. I immediately thought of my grandmother and my mother, two very strong, hardworking, loving women I have nothing but love and admiration for. (Click to enlarge)

Theme for March ATC is Bling

Here's my little artist trading card for March - I blinged up Betty Boop. Betty Boop is one of my favorite characters from way back when. Such a cute little cartoon character. (Click to enlarge)

February ATC

The theme this month is At the Circus - Under the BigTop. So I went on the hunt for some clowns on the internet. Came up with some very neat pictures including the one above. He would have worked out well - then I happened to look up over my computer and .........

there is this guy. He's crude and scary (don't think the granddaughters liked him very much) but I'm kind of sentimental about him. Way back in 1962, my brother took up oil painting. I guess he figured I might be able to paint so he gave me a book, the paints, and canvas and I proceeded to have a go at it. Actually, it was lots of fun and I was able to do it pretty well but just to copy things. No originality on my part at all. However, this old clown has been hanging around our home ever since. I think it was Hannah who really was afraid of it and I would take it down and stick it behind something when she came. (I'm sure one of them will correct me if I'm wrong). The smell of the oil paint and turpentine was something I liked. One other note, the old duck decoy underneath the painting is one that I thought was carved by my dad, who was an avid duckhunter and had many beautiful old decoys. Decoys are art in themselves. Dad's were sold a long time ago and I have always wished I had one of them. This little one though, I found out, is not one of his but was done by a neighbor kid who is a little older than I am. I think he used to hunt with Dad some. Something has gnawed the end of the bill off, but I like it anyway. The head is on a swivel screw so it can look forward or backward.

Three Projects

The past week I actually didn't do much in the way of sewing or quilting, but I did figure out and get started on projects that have to be done in the near future. There is the ATC that needs to be thought up and then put together. We are also having a Valentine exchange for the February meeting of the guild. Those who wanted to join in drew a name from the list of other participants and will make that person a handmade something. The only reqirement is that it will have a heart on it. Then in April, the quilt show challenge is due with the theme of children's story books. Along with the 20 x 24" piece, we each will donate a book for charity on the subject we chose. So, I did some designing on my EQ5 software. Believe me, what I do on that is super simple but it is a lot of fun. Love putting in the colors and fabric. It will be interesting to see if I can make the actual piece look like the project I printed out. So the picture above contains peeks of the three things I will be working on in the next few days. January ATC

The theme for the ATC swap that Julie, Claire, Debby and I have been doing for three years - it doesn't seem that long - for January is favorite quotes.Here is the one I did - hard to read, but it is there anyway.

Claire gave us hers earlier and it is the one with the three quotes in a pocket - very cool. Julie's card, as usual, is charming with a darling little girl perched in a tree. Debby has been on a fantastic trip and we haven't received hers yet but know it will be forthcoming. Jane, Tarzan and Cheetah

Tonight at the guild Christmas dinner, three of the four of us who trade the ATCs exchanged cards. Julie and I had both done posts about our cards so we knew that our great minds were in the same channel. However, when Clair came up with her card ----- there was Cheetah!! How fun is that? Debby wasn't there tonight - she is traveling - and now we wonder if she is doing Boy? Wasn't he with Tarzan, too? (Click to enlarge)

December ATCs

The theme for our artist trading cards this month is "Jungle Boogie" and here are my cards. I found this darling little "Jane" on the internet and also the cute background on another website. Jane is cutout and mounted with a little piece of sticky foam that scrapbookers use to make her stand away from the card but that doesn't show up in the picture very well. (Click to enlarge)

November ATC's

I have written about Mopsy in the last paragraph and wanted to put in a picture of her. She is out of place, but I have never figured out how to move the pictures around!

Theme this month is Paper Dolls - which were a major part of my childhood, probably even into the eighth grade. At that point, it was more drawing around the dolls and designing clothes for them . I had a friend, Fern Davis, who was just as enthusiastic as I was when it came to these paper playmates. We would spend hours drawing, designing, coloring and creating pretty things for our paps. I did four different cards - all featuring cutouts from the Sunday funny papers. The first is Jane Arden - and that one was probably right at the peak of my interest. She was in the paper often. Next was Tillie the Toiler and I think the particular doll on that card would have been before my time a little - and the chubby cutie below was when I was really little so I probably never had one of her. Boots and her Buddies were during my paper doll days.

I tried hard to find an image of a Brenda Starr paper doll, my second favorite. Mopsy was my very first favorite. However, I think with Mopsy, it was more the comic strip since most of the paper dolls I found of her where at a later date when I would have given them up. I do recall loving to try and draw her with her wonderful curly hair. I am going to add a picture of her to this post, but it will be at the top of it since I don't know how to move the pics around. October ATC

October the theme for our ATC group is "What's your sign" - and here is my Leo the Lion. Julie (http://justtickety-boo.blogspot.com/) already has hers done and posted and looking good. You can check it out by going to her blog.

She also has a card found on the net pretty much like the one above except for her sign, of course. I happened to find this as I was looking around for some inspiration. Thought she would get a kick out of mine, too. That's where I got the Born to Rule! I am feeling a nap coming on!

My First Artist Trading Card

I was browsing through some of the files on my computer and I found this picture. Several years ago there was a group of quilters that met at the local quilt shop for a time to experiment with different techniques and less traditional work. I enjoyed that a lot - we made some art journals and dabbled in some of the things that are so prevalent at this time such as using paints, embellishments, etc. This was an ATC I made using a scan of a picture of me when I was about 6 years old. I used some old taffeta and tatting and did a little ribbon embroidery. I kind of like this little thing! (Click to enlarge)

The Bathing Beauties - June ATC's

Having Fun and Giggling by Myself

Have been fiddling on the computer here for a couple of hours working on my bathing beauty ATC cards for June. This kind of thing is such a lot of fun - I like it almost as well as quilting. Just had to put up one of the cards - I don't think Claire checks up on my blog but it's okay if she does. If I do say so myself, I think this has turned out so darned cute - and there are three more that are just as much fun but I will save those for after our meeting. They make me giggle.

I kind of want to tease my blogging buddy, Julie, at http://justtickety-boo.blogspot.com/ a little bit and make her wonder what she looks like on her card. I will say, I have one wonderful body myself!! Deb looks quite lovely and a little coy on hers. Unveiling next week! (Click to enlarge)

Artist Trading Cards for April & May

I didn't get my ATC's finished last month so I caught up this month.

The April theme was Birds of a Feather - so here is my bird. I always have fakey flamingos in my garden - tacky but oh so cute.

Here is my card for May's science fiction theme. Flash Gordon was a comic strip when I was a kid in grade school - and there was also an old one called Buck Rogers. Flash's girlfriend is Dale and the other fellow is a Dr. Someoneorother - can't recall his name nor the name of the monsterlike creature. Isn't it amazing you can find anything you want on the internet!! Love it!

Q2 Tonight

Very Productive Guild Meeting Tonight

On a previous post, I showed pictures that Melissa took of little still life groups that we set up. She was able to get them printed today and tonight brought along the pictures and the packages of cards and envelopes our members have donated. These notes will be packaged and sold at our quilt show bazaar in March - the bazaar has proved to be really successful for our guild. Above are three of our members working on gluing the pictures on the card fronts.

Julie is all smiles as she works doing her part of getting the cards ready.

More of our girls working diligently at their assigned task. The members also glued all the hints to the bookmarks and did the hole punching and ribbon attaching for our giveaways. How great that all that is now done - many hands get work done in record time. We had a great attendance for such a cold night.

A Little or a Lot of Snow Won't Keep Quilters Home

Tonight was our guild's Christmas dinner meeting at Pat and Jerry's in Auburn. Great meal and a sinful (and sinfully delicious) dessert consisting of cream puffs filled with ice cream, topped with hot fudge, whipped cream and a cherry! Despite a snowy day, slick roads and lots of snow, about 40 showed up to share the good food and fellowship of a great group of quilters. The grid game round robins are coming along nicely - certainly looks like there will be some fun wallhangings emerging at the February meeting. The picture is of this month's trading cards that four of us exchange each month - with this month's theme being one or some of our favorite things. ATC's for November

Guild met last night - we had a very large turnout. Q2 is growing by leaps and bounds. Such a good group. Next month is our Christmas dinner meeting and again it will be at Pat and Jerry's in Auburn. Having a dinner out is so much easier than fixing something and having a potluck. Those are good, too, of course, but it's nice to sit back and be waited on.

Here are the ATC's for November representing any country we wished. Julie chose Scotland, her country of heritage, Claire picked the good old USA and I opted for Germany. Deb wasn't there last night. October ATC's

Theme for this month was Fairy Tales - one of the four cards is from Debby and was her card for the You Can Drive My Car theme a few months ago. Claire did not get hers in this month but I'm sure there will be two from her in November. Debby and Julie both did the Princess and the Pea and Carol did Little Red Riding Hood. Fun stuff. Next month will be any country you want.
