Pictures from Africa

Here are Hannah and Molly in Africa together.  Heavens, who would have thought those little girls would have ever been any place like that!  In this photo, they are at Victoria Falls in Livingstone.   Molly was there for two weeks and spent Thanksgiving with Hannah and her fellow PCV's.  Also, there is a new post up on Hannah's blog telling about the things they did while together.

They took a guided tour and saw animals.  Some of them were pretty close.  Hannah talks about it in her post.

Pretty picture - looks almost like a painting.
With their guide and a rhino in the background.  Hannah is basically on her way home now - will be here in three weeks.  She will be doing some sightseeing with friends before catching the plane for home.  It is going to be so good to see her!!!!!!

Off to Africa

This past weekend, Sherry did some shopping for things Hannah was in need of and that she wanted for everyday living.  My assignment and contribution was to pack it up and send it on its way to our Peace Corps volunteer.  Toiletries, some spices, M & M Peanuts, etc., along with spatulas, magazine, peanut butter, parmesan, tums,  etc., really mostly everyday things that we so take for granted  were packed in two large flat rate USPS boxes.  I added some Mike & Ike candy (had never heard of it), Sour Patch Kids (she used to get those when at the movies) and some Skittles.  One thing she wanted were things for her walls - so I did some shopping in my closet and came up with these bright wallhangings that I think she will like.  Both of these were done in classes our guild had in the past.  The little one with flowers was in a Mickey Depres class several years ago, and the scrappy one in a class by Gwen Marston.  So they will now grace Hannah's wall in Mozambique.  Her 22nd birthday is the end of this month - I hope she gets her box of goodies from us by then!  (Click to enlarge)

Fashion Friday

This morning Fashion Friday features my son, daughter and me back in the mid to late 1960's when we lived in Topeka, Kansas.  Bill has finally grown taller than Sherry and is probably as tall as I am without my rather  high hair and probably heels.  Bill is clad in good looking trousers and jacket.  A wide belt with big buckle can be seen through his open jacket, and a white shirt and tie complete his look.   Carol wears a printed suit with a chiffon scarf tucked in at the neckline and big, white earrings.  (I look at these old pictures and wish I were in that shape again!)  Sherry looks sweet in her long sleeved dress with a high neckline and wide cuffs that have four or five buttons on each.  A pretty headband keeps her hair back.  We were most certainly on our way to church on a Sunday morning.  Where have the years gone?  (Click to enlarge)

Hoping you all had a very nice Thanksgiving.  Wanted to add to the post the fact that we talked to all three girls yesterday, Norah and Chad were on the way to KC, Molly and Doug in Portland and Hannah in Mozambique!  Last year we were all together in KC on the holiday so this year was very quiet but very nice nevertheless.  I was just so thrilled to hear how bubbly and enthusiastic Hannah is - she is so excited to get to her site.   Not a hint of discontent and so much anticipation of actually getting set up and settled in.  Music to the ears!

My Fat Quarters from Janet

Last week I won a giveaway from Janet at http://ahugdelights.blogspot.com/ and it came in the mail yesterday.  The fabric is by Moda and it is beautiful - Moda is my favorite!  And Janet's blog is one of my favorites, also.  Drop by and read her blog - you won't be disappointed.  Thank you so much for the generous gift!!  I will find something fun to do with it.  (Click to enlarge)

And there won't be a post on Hannah's blog this week - she has been busy and will take this week off.  I had an e-mail from her and she is doing great.  Sherry talked to her one morning and Hannah had received the first box sent so now has her bible, vitamins, and a sweatshirt among other items.  She said she had the sweatshirt on and it "smelled like home".  That brought a tear to my eye!!

Great Treats This Halloween

Here she is in Africa!   I consider this a wonderful "treat" to find pictures and a new post (and e-mail) on this Halloween day.  If you are reading Hannah's blog, there is a new post this morning.  You will enjoy it.

Then in my spam folder, I found an e-mail from Janet telling me I had won a stack of Moda Blush fat quarters!  Now that also is a wonderful "treat" to look forward to receiving.  Janet has such a great blog - she lives on a ranch in South Dakota and works along with her husband helping to get the many things done that come with the territory.   A lovely lady, it's a joy to read her posts.  And as flat as South Dakota is, she has some gorgeous pictures of the everchanging skies.  Thank you, Janet, for the very generous gift - I look forward to it.  (Click on Hannah to enlarge)

The Green Ladies

I have been working on getting these ladies together this weekend. I am not as enthused with this as I was when I started working on it, but that does happen once in a while. Without the dark green, it was very bland and with the little touches of green it peps it up a bit. However, when it's sewn together, pressed and quilted, I think it will look fine.

I am having problems with my computer - it is taking forever to move around, so I am ready to shut it down and then tomorrow call the cable company and see why it's so very slow.  It has been just skipping right along and now it's rather like molasses in January.  We do get spoiled!

On another and much better note, I am so happy to read Hannah's blog and her e-mail and to find her so positive about her stay in Africa.  The family she is staying with while she trains sounds like a great second family.  If you have time and the inclination, click on her picture at the top of my sidebar and read about the beginning of her time in the Peace Corps.  I am so very proud of her.   There is also a link on her blog to pictures.  It's at the top of her sidebar.

Paper Piecing Class

Here is Linda, one of the ladies in our guild.  She is a master in the art of paper piecing and even designs her own patterns on EQ 7.  She taught a class this past Tuesday and this is the wall hanging that she taught us how to piece.  My Tuesday was a comedy of errors and I didn't get to the class until it was half through - along with one of the other quilters.  I was absolutely certain it was on Wednesday - wrong!!  However, I have done quite a bit of paper piecing but really picked up some great tips from Linda and did put in some pretty small pieces that I never thought I would ever do.

The pattern is in 16 segments and I have done three of them so far.  I was not happy with the little bit that I did get done Tuesday, so spent quite a bit of time working out the colors today.  Still not completely satisfied but don't want to buy any more fabric since I have so much in my stash.  It is looking pretty good, though, and still have some more to add that will be the star in the middle.
So here it is - not very far along but I think it will be okay.
On a different note, I was so happy to find an e-mail from Hannah and a new post this morning.  She has been on my mind and out of touch for about a week.  Sherry and Barclay actually talked to her today and were so thrilled  to hear her voice.  Isn't this technology something?  Wow!  If you are interested in reading her post, just click on her picture near the top of my sidebar and it will pop right up.  (Click to enlarge)

A Quick Note

If you are following Hannah's blog about her exerience in the Peace Corps, there is a new post which you can read by clicking on her picture near the top of my sidebar just to the right.  The blog and e-mails make her seem closer!  Technology is amazing.  New posts always show up in the list of blogs I follow, also.

A Potpourri

It just  came to my mind that this post is about things that start with the letter "p".  First of all and so wonderful is that there was an e-mail from our dear little  Peace Corps volunteer Hannah this morning - she is safe and sound in Africa and full of enthusiasm and ready for her wonderful adventure.  Then late this afternoon, Sherry called me and she had just talked to Hannah on Skype - she was bubbling over and so happy to have talked with and seen her.  The wonders of technology!   Just wanted to share our joy!

Now I will switch to paper piecing!   Next week Linda in our guild will be teaching a class and we will be doing a design she has created on EQ 7.  She is a master at the art of paper piecing and it will be wonderful to spend the day in her class.  I have been picking out my fabric - went "shopping" in the basement and was able to come up with almost all of the 11 different fabrics needed.  I did have to buy the background fabric which is the black with the swirly design in dots.  I just don't have very many larger pieces of batiks.  Actually, I don't have large pieces of  many fabrics since I do such scrappy quilts.  I usually buy the bigger pieces as I need them.

The third "p" in this post is for the Polka Dot Girls that I started last fall.  They have been kind of hidden away in their box but I got them out the other day and now about have the fourth set out of eight finished.  This one is wrinkled and has not been washed or pressed yet.  I also see that I didn't embroider the rake!  Back in the hoop it will go.  (Click to enlarge)

It looks like autumn, it feels like autumn - and, of course, it is autumn.   The scarecrow and pumpkins above are on a sweatshirt that I made a few years ago.   The pattern is from one of the older books from Red Wagon, I think that is the name of the company.  Very cute and primitive patterns from a couple of ladies in the Kansas City area.

Here are two little skirts that kind of look like autumn, too, but they will soon be on their way to Africa with Hannah - she will be leaving so very bright and early tomorrow morning.  I find it hard to find things to say, so will make this very short.  I will go over this evening for cheesie potato soup (her favorite) with Sher, Barc and the little Peace Corps volunteer.  I am so proud of her.  (Click to enlarge)

Hannah Will Be Leaving for Africa Soon

Ready or not, the time for Hannah to leave for her 27 month stint in the Peace Corps is almost here. This extraordinary young woman will be going to Mozambique in Africa very, very early in the morning a week from tomorrow. What a mix of emotions fill the minds of all of us who love her so much - happy that she will be going on such an awesome adventure that she has talked of and worked for for such a long time - and a sadness thinking that she will be gone for so very long and be so far, far away. Even though time seems to fly by so quickly, right now 27 months seems like an eternity. Each and every one of her family is behind her and supporting her and loving her with all that is in them. She's such a little thing - small, but mighty.

She needed some skirts - and I am making her skirts. Three of them - two in batiks. The pattern is in the picture above along with two of the skirts. There is a definite dress code there - no shorts or spaghetti straps. She will be teaching science - in Portuguese - which she has been working on. There will be ten weeks of schooling for her after they get to Africa and she will actually start teaching around December. Already, Hannah has set up a blog and I will have a link here on mine - you might enjoy reading it. She hasn't started posting yet, but I think she will this week. That is one thing about this day and age - the communication is wonderful, albeit the actual mail is slow!
Today was an open house held at Sherry and Barc's good friends home. It was a pretty day and many of Hannah's friends came to wish her Adeus and good wishes. She has been very active in church and everyone loves her. You just can't help doing that. Norah and Chad will come next weekend before Hannah leaves. Molly is coming the following weekend to go to a wedding of a very good girlfriend of hers since way back in grade school. It will be so good for Sherry and Barc (and me, too) to have her here at that time . There will be some "teary" days for a spell. May God keep a special eye on our Hannah as she embarks on this new adventure.

My Newest Grandson and His Wife

On Saturday, I acquired a second new grandson when Molly and Doug were married in Portland, Oregon, at a beautiful wedding held at the Cheatham Hall in the World Forestry Center. A good time was had by everyone attending the ceremony and the reception was under the huge tent outside where little white lights twinkled when darkness fell. There was a band that Doug's uncle and his cousin had and they were really good. Doug is from a large family and probably the lion's share of the guests were family. Quite a few little ones there plus his three young nephews were in the wedding party. Henry and Dawson were ring bearers and candle lighters and the older boy was an usher. Doug's sister officiated at the ceremony. You can see Christine, his sister, in the picture below when you enlarge it along with two of her boys that were in the party, her husband to the right, and Doug's brother to the left. Here is the beautiful bride, Molly, with her maid and matron of honor, Hannah and Norah. Gosh, I adore these three girls! Molly just glowed. And her dress was just so beautiful - a heavy lace and I don't know what it is called. Maybe someone can tell me. The little one did the hair. Weather in Portland turned hot about Wednesday and the wedding was Saturday and still hot. However, they have very low humidity so that makes such a difference. All in all, what a fun time we all had. I have been draggy today but will bounce back to being a little less draggy, my usual condition.

Hannah on Friday found out that she would be receiving the invitation for the Peace Corps for sure. Today, the UPS brought her package and she will be going to Mozambique, Africa, the end of September. It is such a relief for her to know for sure - it's been quite a long time coming. It's bittersweet, but I am absolutely so happy for her. How I wish when I was a young woman we had had the choices the girls do now, but I am in no way unhappy about my life as I have lived it.

Have lots of blogs to catch up on and will be doing that a bit at a time. Hope all is well with all of you! (Click to enlarge)
