What a Great Weekend

What a great weekend with my family for my 83rd birthday.  My son and his wife came in Thursday night late after having driven from KC to Michigan in one day.   My middle granddaughter and her husband came from Portland, OR, and stayed with Sherry and Barc.  Saturday we had a dinner here and then all went to the Loons ball game - a farm team for the Dodgers that is based here.  Dow Chemical is the big employer in Midland and they were responsible for the absolutely wonderful stadium that was built a few years ago.  Great place for families and baseball fans to go have a fun evening.  Sunday was a steak cookout at my daughter's home.  Missing and missed were Hannah and Norah and family.  However, we all talked to Hannah on the phone over the weekend and she sounds wonderful.  She was telling us how she has added electricity in each room now from the one hanging bulb she had.  We are amazed. And she has painted all (probably 3) rooms different colors and all have pink doors.  What a girl!  We also skyped with Norah, Chad and Henry on Sunday and got to watch the little baby funny faces and hear some of his little sounds.  Labor Day weekend Sherry, Barclay and I will fly to Colorado and meet Henry - so looking forward to that so much.  Aunt Molly will fly in from Portland, too.

All in all, I had such a happy birthday.   I enjoyed the birthday comments so much.  Blogging and quilting keep me busy and moving along.  I did, however, have two naps yesterday and did not get much done.   I have days like that every once in a while anyway!  Thank you, my dear family, I love you all.

83 Today

Today this little girl turns 83 years old.  The years have flown by so quickly.  I am so very blessed to have such a wonderful family, good health, and most of my mind still functioning.  Now, on to 84 "be the good Lord willing and the creek don't rise" as Arthur Gordfrey used to say.

OMG, What Kind of a Mother Am I?

Fifty-eight years ago today, we had a  birthday party for this sweet little two year old girl who has now turned 60.   Can you imagine I forgot to put up a birthday post for my daughter?   I didn't forget her birthday - just didn't do a post.  Oh, me, oh, my, the mind is starting to go!  Here she is with the whole family, except for my brother who was in the air force at the time.  Sherry is in her new wagon between daddy and (a pregnant) mommy.  In back is my sister, Jo, her two grandmas - Ray's mom and mine, her grandpa who always had gum for "Sherry's mouth",  her great grandmother, Maggie Pearce, whose was 82 that same
day, and her great aunt Leah, my mom's sister.

Here she is with her brother, Bill, and his 57 Chevie when we lived in Newton, Kansas, in the very early 1970's,
Here is a cute picture of Sher showing off her new fingernails she had done in Portland before Molly's wedding last summer.  This summer she and Barclay will be grandparents for the first time.  Their girls are scattered all over but they are still such a close family.  Molly in Portland, Norah now in Denver and that Hannah way over there in Mozambique.  She will be coming back for a visit at Christmas and that will be wonderful.  She will need to meet her new little nephew!

The entire family last summer at Molly and Doug's wedding.
So, my dear daughter, the day isn't over so I did get this in on your actual birthday.  Just want you to know I am so very glad we had you - you are quite a woman!   I am very proud of you and love you so much.  Many more happy birthdays to you, Sher.  God bless!

Happy Birthday, Molly

For you with lots and lots of love on your 30th birthday!  There is a card on its way to you and I hope it gets there on time.
Here is a much earlier birthday picture with your mom, dad, big sister and grandpa - guess who is taking the picture?  I think this is good of all of you.  Little sister wouldn't show up for some time after this birthday.
I'm not sure whether this was the same birthday or not (I think it was) when your grandpa and I fixed up this little dollhouse for your birthday.  Molly, you have always been such a joy and still are.   I wish you many, many happy birthdays. xxxxxxxxxxooooooooooxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Grandma

I So Look Forward to my 83rd Birthday

Here is my first grandchild.  That darling little girl, Norah Lee, sitting by the patio door with Mugsy and Teddy when she was probably 18 months or thereabouts is now waiting with her husband Chad to have their own little girl or boy next summer!   That means the Funoldhag is going to be a great grandmother!  And, are you ready for this, the due date is August 21st - my 83rd birthday!   I am pumped!!  However, I will not hold them to that exact date, for sure, the little one can come when the little one is ready.  But wouldn't it be wonderful to share my birthday?  And, an added note, I had Norah's mom, Sherry, on my grandmother's, Maggie, 80th birthday.  Sweet!!   And, of course, that means that Sherry and Barclay are going to be grandma and grandpa - they will excel in their new roles!  So will the two new aunties and Uncle Doug.  In the picture, the monkey (in diapers) is Mugsy, a birthday present to Bill when he was two.  He spotted the monkey when I had the kids in Ben Franklin's shopping.  I put him on layaway for Bill's birthday (even $3.00 was a lot of money back then) and when we gave him to Bill he was so excited.  How I wish there had been camcorders back then.  Bill thought he was alive, I think.  I kissed that monkey good night everynight when I kissed Bill and whispered in Bill's ear and Mugsy's ear also.   Mugsy lives with great uncle Bill and great aunt  Ann still.  Teddy is Norah's little bear that was actually on a swing on a macrame hanger that I made for her room.  That little bear became her security blanket, her best friend and constant companion.  I'll bet she still has Teddy.  I am excited!!!!!!!

Happy Birthday, Hannah

Sunday is my youngest granddaughter's 22nd birthday - and as you who read my blog know, Hannah is in Africa in the Peace Corps so it may be Sunday over there right now or getting very close.  No one has ever asked me to sing or even encouraged me a little bit, but I did find this cute little kitten to be my stand in for a happy birthday song to Hannah.  I had an e-mail from her this morning and she is planning on posting to her blog this weekend - I am so anxious for that.

Here is Hannah on her birthday that doesn't seem all that long ago and I think it was her 8th and it was a bowling party.  How do they grow up so quickly?
In the meantime, my dear granddaughter, you are loved, being thought of  and wished a fun birthday way over there in Africa.  xxxxxxxxxxxxooooooooooxxxxxxxxxxxx from your Grandma.

Happy Birthday, Bill!!

Here is our three year old Billy Ray sharing some birthday cake with his Uncle Bud back in 1956. Bill turns 57 this year and Bud, my "kid" brother, will turn 78 on the 6th. Note the trumpet sitting right next to Bill - that was the favorite birthday present that year. We lived in a house right across the street from the side of the high school and the band would practice in the street in front of our house. This little fellow was super excited and would march up and down the living room "boom, boom, boom"!  He had great rythym and loved music.

Playing a tune for Grandma!

Big sister, Sherry, and Daddy, who is a real trumpet player, showing Billy the mute.  Looks like it even has a case.

Mommy lighting the three candles while Sherry looks on - the trumpet is beside the cake.  Great present!
So, Bill, I wish you a very happy birthday with many more on the horizon and send you much love along with these wishes. Again, I never would have taken you to the Used Boy Lot!!  Have a fun birthday weekend in Chicago - I will call you and I promise not to sing!

Also, to my brother on his 78th birthday on Monday, I send love and wishes for all good things! Will call you on your birthday, too!! (Click to enlarge)

Fashion Friday and Happy Birthday, Norah Lee

On this Friday morning in August, our model is a smiling, dark eyed little cutie pie - my favorite oldest granddaughter, Norah. Norah is dressed in a darling green terrycloth sunsuit which is accented by a wonderful shell necklace, a pearl bracelet and lovely earrings. Her accessories came from the old candy tin full of wonderful jewelry kept at grandma and grandpa's house just for little granddaughters to enjoy. You can also see the game of Ad Lib that we played many, many times.

And, in addition to Fashion Friday, this post brings lots of love to Norah on her birthday on the 11th which will be celebrated by the whole family while we are in Portland for Molly and Doug's wedding. Happy Birthday, Norah! (Click to enlarge)

With Love on Your 21st Birthday, Hannah

Twenty-one years ago today, this sweet little baby girl was born and she was named Hannah Alice. In this picture, she is just a day old - give or take some hours. It was so much fun that they asked for clothing to dress the baby up for her first picture and added a sweet bow and flowers in her hair no less.
Now here she is - all grown up and twenty-one. This was taken a few hours ago when we were at lunch in Ann Arbor celebrating her big day. Sher, Barc, their best friends, Deb and Steve, and Hannah and I had a good time eating and watching Hannah open her gifts. We sang "Happy Birthday" to her and almost immediately everyone in the restaurant joined us with great gusto. When the song was finished, everyone applauded. Great moment! Hannah will be graduating from Michigan State this spring at the end of her junior year. The plans are in the works for her to go into the Peace Corps this fall. Our Hannah may be small in stature, but her dreams and goals are big, and she works diligently in the pursuit of those achievements.
So, my dear granddaughter, I love you and am very proud of you and I wish you great success in everything you do. Happy Birthday!!

(Boy, did I goof!!!! Norah has pointed out to her goofy old grandmother that Hannah will be graduating from the University of Michigan - not Michigan State. Of course, that is Norah's alma mater - so it's two to one for the girls with Molly being the Michigan State grad!
Accept my apologies, my pretties! xxxxxoooooxxxxx)

My Birthday Present Came in the Mail

For my birthday last August, those three pretty girls that are pictured at the bottom of my sidebar (my dear granddaughters) told me I would be getting the Ally McBeal series in October. It has arrived as they said it would and I want Norah, Molly and Hannah to know how much I am going to enjoy this gift and that I thank them so much for such a great gift and that I love them so very, very much. This is one of my all time favorite television series that I just hated to see go off the air. So quirky and cute. Any series that David Kelley had anything to do with has always been a favorite of mine. Picket Fences, Boston Legal, Boston Public are the ones I think of right now. This will take a while to watch, but it will be there for me on the long nights this winter and I will enjoy it as much now as I did then.

Fashion Friday - Birthday Party Attire

Here is a picture showing what the invited attendees were wearing to birthday parties in August of 1931. Carol, who was three years old, is shown here with her hands by her face looking very cute in her summery dress and short haircut. Hmmm, that's sort of the way I wear my hair now. The other little girls are also wearing summery frocks. I am pretty sure the lady standing behind Carol is holding her new little sister, Joanne Lee, and her Aunt Henrietta, kneeling at left, is holding her little boy, Hap, who is Carol's cousin. Aunt Henrietta is wearing a cute sleeveless dress. She was a fun lady with a really cute giggle. Standing next to the birthday girl is Betty Brown, who is Carol's Uncle Ham's little sister-in-law. Dear Aunt Leah is at the right end of the second row holding an unknown child. On Carol's other side is her grandparents' little neighbor boy, Newell Smith. Newell lived with his grandmother and Aunt Rose. His grandma had a very high pitched voice and our grandma referred to her as "Squeak" but not to her face, of course. It fit her perfectly.

This is the first page in the baby book - there is also a post on
showing the other pages if you would like to check them out. How is this for a chubby, happy, healthy little girl? Probably 9 months to a year.

And this is the hospital bill for mom and baby for 12 days! They practically gave Carol away!

I am now 81 years old and cannot believe it. I am so thankful to have been so blessed for all these years with good health, a wonderful loving family and a very good life.

Happy Birthday, Norah Lee

Today is my oldest granddaughter's 32nd birthday. She was the beginning of a very lovely new phase in the lives of Ray and me - being grandparents. I know I have said it many times, but there is nothing like having grandchildren.
Here she is in her jewelry - I had an old candy tin and filled it with old costume jewelry for the kids to play with. That was well used - and for years. Also, you can see to the left, the AdLib game which Norah and I played a lot. Lots of wonderful memories of the three girls.
Here she is on her third birthday - poor little girl had a cold but she still enjoyed her birthday. This is a truck she got - and I think it was from Uncle Bill and Aunt Ann - but I could be mistaken. This was in 1980 - where have the years gone?

Norah and Chad - they will be married in just a few weeks and I am so looking forward to being with all the family again. What a great couple!
Again, Happy Birthday, Norah, with so much love from Grandma

Happy Birthday, Sherry

Today is my daughter's 58th birthday - where has the time gone. Here is our sweet little baby girl all dressed up and sleeping in her buggy at 8 weeks old. Can you believe I used to dress her in the little dresses and slips all the time and they had to be ironed? How different were the times back in the 50's.

Here is Sherry Kay in her tap shoes and costume when she was in a recital back in Chillicothe at about age 5.
I love this picture so much - Sherry and her Dad on her wedding day going down the aisle to be married to Barclay, her husband of 34 years and my other son. She is wearing her great, great-grandmother's cameo. Sher was born on my grandma's birthday which was 138 years ago today. What a sweet picture of Sherry and of Ray - what sweet people and what a sweet day.
Sherry, you are a delight and a beautiful woman - a wonderful daughter, sister, wife and mother to three of the loveliest young women in the world. I love you and wish you a Happy Birthday! Enjoy your summer vacation!! (Click to enlarge)

Happy Birthday, Molly

Twenty-eight years ago today, a darling little girl with big brown eyes came into our lives. Molly is the middle granddaughter in a set of three all of whom have given their grandparents such joy and so much fun and happy memories.
This is the granddaughter that labeled me the "old hag" when we would tease each other. I think that got started in a spirited game of croquet back in Illinois.

Molly in her pretty dress always brings back a very fond memory. Sher, Barclay and the girls came from Michigan to Illinois for Christmas before we moved up here. Dinner was almost ready and everyone was presentable but not really dressed up. Molly came out from the bedroom in her pretty dress, white tights and red shoes - all ready for Christmas dinner. That was an "Awwwww" moment for me.
So, Molly, have a wonderful birthday out there in Portland and, even though your paper card won't get there on time, I am thinking of you and sending you lots of love and

Back Home Again

We flew in yesterday evening after a really great trip to Portland for Barclay's birthday. The weather was picture perfect - it was as if we had put in an order and had been served in a very grand style. In the 70's and sunny - who could ask for anything more!

On Saturday we went up to Mount Hood and it was like going from one season to the other. The snow is still really, really deep - in feet - up there. It is so incredibly beautiful. We ate at the lodge - which you can barely see in this picture. I don't think I have ever seen so much snow. Here we all are ready for lunch. Not a bad looking group, really. The birthday boy and his wife, Sher and Barclay, are first couple on the left - then Hannah, Norah and her Chad, Doug and Molly, the old hag and Bill and Ann.

Happy Birthday, Barclay - and many, many more! (Today is his actual birthday)

Happy Birthday, Hannah

Hannah is 20 years old today! Where, or where did that time go? She spent that time growing up to be a lovely, smart, fun young woman as you can see in the final picture at the bottom of my sidebar. She is the youngest of my three lovely, smart, fun young granddaughters.Just how cute can a little girl be?

In the "princess" costume we got at a neighbor's garage sale. I found the tiara and wand at the Dollar store later. We sat on the front stoop one afternoon and she was resplendent in her lovely princess outfit. Hannah looked at me and said, "Grandma, won't people be surprised to see a princess sitting here?"
With so much love,

Another Birthday

Saturday, December 6th, is my kid brother's 76th birthday. This picture was taken back in Chillicothe two years ago when we were all back for the high school alumni banquet - Bud and Dot, his wife, were there from Florida for their 55th reunion and I was there for my 60th. I didn't get a card off in the mail but I hope you know that I wish you good health and hope you're feeling good and have lots more birthdays.

Happy Birthday, Brother!

With love from your big sis,
Carol

Happy 55th Birthday, Bill!

A long ago party in Ft. Madison, Iowa - it was your 7th birthday. Mark Edlen, Tommy Snowden, Mike McLemore, Myron Morgan (he was the most wild little kid but darling), Denny Hawkins and someone named Jeffery or Jeremy (remembered the names of all but the last two and they were written in the album.) You are the best son parents could ever want and I never would have taken you to the used boy lot!!!

Happy Day, Bill. I love you.

p.s. It's my 150th post.

Happy Birthday, Ann

Today is my daughter-in-law's birthday. This is a kaleidoscope made from a picture taken when she, Bill and I visited Molly in Portland several years ago. Sending you lots of love on your birthday, Ann!! (Click to enlarge)
